How to Choose the Right Material for Pig Nursery Crates
Added:2025-12-23
Piglets aged 22 to 77 days are in a critical growth phase. They grow rapidly but are highly sensitive to cold, drafts, and disease. Providing them with a well-designed pig nursery crate is essential to ensure comfort, reduce stress, and improve survival rates.
Separating piglets from older pigs allows farms to create dedicated nursery units—smaller in size, easier to heat, and better controlled for temperature, ventilation, and hygiene. This staged approach also enables more precise matching of flooring, feeding systems, and climate control to the specific needs of piglets.
When selecting materials for pig nursery crates, two key factors matter most: durability and thermal insulation. Below are the most common material used in modern pig farms:

1. Full Metal Crate – Vertical Round Steel Bars
Hot-dip galvanized finish
Height: 700 mm
Frame: 25mm round tube or 30×30 mm square tube
Vertical bars: 9 mm solid round steel, spaced 50 mm apart
Bottom clearance: 50 mm above floor
Assembly: Bolted on-site with standard fasteners—no welding required
Best for: Long service life in high-wear environments

2. Full Metal Crate – Horizontal Round Steel Bars
Hot-dip galvanized
Height: 700 mm
Top frame: 3# angle iron, 6mm tube, or 30×30 mm square tube
Bottom frame:25mm tube or 18 mm round steel
Horizontal bars: 9 mm solid round steel
Assembly: Connected with standard fittings, no additional welding required
Best for: Robust, low-maintenance housing

3. Hot-dip Galvanized Columns + 500×35 mm PVC Hollow Board + Two Horizontal Bars
Height: 700 mm
Columns: Hot-dip galvanized
Top Horizontal Bar: 35×35 mm square tube or 1-inch round tube (25mm tube sometimes used to cut cost)
Components: 500×35 mm PVC board + two horizontal bars + columns
Assembly: Connected with standard fittings, no additional welding required
Note: It is required to use two horizontal bars at the top—older piglets can easily chew through unsupported PVC board.

4. Hot-dip Galvanized Columns + 600×35 mm PVC Hollow Board + One Horizontal Bars
Height: 700 mm
Columns: Hot-dip galvanized
Top Horizontal Bar: 25mm round tube
Taller PVC board improves insulation while maintaining ventilation
Ideal for: Moderate climates with seasonal temperature swings
